Every day the battle between light and darkness is being fought in one the most famous churches of Lyon. Every morning the light drives the darkness away, and in the evening the darkness gains on the light again. But even during the day the darkness is never really gone…
Just before I moved to France, I was in Lyon looking at houses and exploring the city. As you really should not visit this magnificent city without visiting its most famous church, of course I also went there. I booked a tour around the place and, while waiting at the base of one of the towers for everyone to arrive, was able to shoot a few images of the tower, before everyone started walking up. This is the result.
Officially called the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, this church has been overlooking the city of Lyon since 1896. Although it is not the oldest church in the city (the Saint Irenaeus Church has crypts dating back as far as the 9th century), it is definitely the one to see if you only have a little bit of time. Because it is located on the top of a hill it also offers amazing views of the city of Lyon.
The church is open from 7 in the morning until 8 in the evening, and anyone can enter. Certain parts of the church can only be access with a guided tour. Tours are €10,- and take about 90 minutes, unfortunately they are only available in French.
This is an active church, and there are still daily services, please be respectful of others.
I hope you enjoy my photos as much as I do. If you do, why not follow me on Instagram: @jackoleenders. It will help me out greatly! 😇
