Good Bones

Designed by @calatravaofficial and build between 1989 and 1994, at the cost of 750 million Francs (almost the same in Euro), the Lyon Saint Exupéry train station is a surprisingly interesting place. From a functional point of view it connects the Lyon airport with the city of Lyon, and in that regard it is not that different from any other train station.

But… no matter how often I see this place, I always find new angles, new nooks and crannies, and vistas I had not seen before. The look of the station changes dramatically when the light changes, and as such, can offer very different views all year round.

Personally, modern architecture is not my thing, and I prefer different, older designs, but this building keeps me coming back for more. What you see on this image is not the main train station, but the bridges that lead off to the sides, and allow for access to the platforms.

Sadly, this is one of the least busy trans stations in Lyon. The other large train stations, like Lyon-Perrache and Lyon Part-Dieu, attract way more travelers. The travelers that do come here are often in a hurry to catch their flight or to busy trying to catch the train away from this place to pay attention to the sleek lines and mostly ignore the station’s beauty.

If you ever get to visit this train station, take a minute, just a single minute, and simply look up. You will not be disappointed.
