Stone Ships

I have to give a big thanks to Nikolay for convincing me to come down south and showing me some of the sights between Burgas and the Turkish border.

These two large rock formations are called the stone ships, and they are incredibly impressive to see. You have to see them for real in order to really be able to appreciate them! You can find them after a short climb at the end of a dirt/gravel road is the village of Sinemorets, only about 15 minutes north of the Bulgaria/Turkish border.

‘Twas the day before New Year, and the predictions looked good, so I had set my alarm for 3:30am and after swearing a few times at my alarm, I drove down the coast to where I was supposed to meet Nikolay. We arrived about an hour before sunrise at the location, and had a quick look around. Parking was not an issue, but I was not looking forward clambering down the rocks in the dark. After surviving the climb we tried to find a spot to set up our cameras and not be in each others way. Even though that sounds simple enough, that turned out to be a lot harder than expected. The rocks were extreme slippery, and the water was just a bit deeper than our shoes were high… 😅

There is always a degree of luck involved with getting photos at sunrise or sunset. A stray cloud can mess everything up, and it is even worse if there are no clouds at all. I guess we were very lucky! Nikolay even mentioned this was the best sunset he had seen in the over 20 times he had come here and tried.

When was the last time you were this lucky?

Check out Nikolay’s Instagram gallery, he is a gifted photographer! I hope you enjoy my photos as much as I do. If you do, why not follow me on Instagram: @jackoleenders. It will help me out greatly!
