Spare change, anyone?

Even though the Bangkok railway station feels like stepping into a time capsule, you can see clear signs that progress has also made it’s way here. No longer do you have to search your pockets for that spare quarter (or baht, I doubt these machines take quarters) as these phones have been fitted with state of the art phone card slots for your convenience.

Located on your right once you enter the station you can find these marvels of modern technology. There are several kiosks located in the train station that can sell you the cards needed, and even a service where you pay a deposit, take a phonecard, and when you return the card you only pay for the credit used.

To take a picture of these payphones you actually need more patience than you would initially imagine, as these phones see a surprising amount of use.

I highly recommend a visit to the Bangkok railway station, it is like stepping back in time. The atmosphere of the place seems like it has not changed in the last 50 years. Completed in 1916 after six years of construction it still serves over 130 trains and 60.000 passengers each day.

Just behind the payphones is a small food court where you can get very cheap but very good authentic Thai food. The people there may not speak English very well but they are extremely friendly and accommodating! Plus, the available in picture format. 😉

Do you know of any other places where time stood still?
