When I set out to take pictures of the rolling lavender fields of Valensole this was not a picture I expected to take… Finding a nice field that is not crawling with people turn out to be next to impossible.
But you know what they say: “if you can’t beat them, join them”, so I did. I started looking for interestingly looking people and I found this photographer. The color of her hair just stood out against all the shades of purple of the lavender. Here she was in between two takes, where her model was changing outfits, and she took the time to just take in and enjoy the beauty of the fields she was using as the backdrop for her images.
For Valensole, part of the French Provence, the lavender season lasts for about a month, starting mid June and ending around mid July, with some local deviations based on weather and altitude. Hotels sell out quickly during these months, so if you are planing to fly in make sure you find and book a hotel well in advance. There is no proper public transport as far as I am aware, so renting a car might also be something you should consider.
Please remember, these fields are private property and peoples livelihood, so try and not trample the plants. Not only would you be directly impacting someones ability to bread on the table for their family, it might also lead to these field becoming off-limits to the public, as some of the fields already are. Enjoy yourself, enjoy the beauty, clean up after yourself and treat the fields with respect, and we will all be able to enjoy this beauty for years to come!
