The Taipei 101 tower, in the heart of the Xinyi district, used to be the tallest building in the world, culminating at 509m. It held this title from 2004 to 2010, when the Burj Khalifa in Dubai opened. It has now been surpassed by 10 buildings, and sits as the 11th tallest building in the world, but has a different claim to fame as the “World’s Toughest Building”. It has a 730-ton damper that helps steady the structure, a much needed reinforcement for a country often hit by typhoons and earthquakes.
