Gold

Not all that glitters is gold, but the Bulgarian city of Varna sure has a lot to offer.

The oldest golden treasure in the world was found here, over 5 millennia old, and they have some amazing beaches at the aptly named Golden Sands. But what draws me out time and time again are the golden sunsets. The sunrises are equally impressive, but I am not that much of a morning person…

At first glance, there are not that many locations to enjoy a stunning sunset, as the sun rises over the sea but sets behind the city. But don’t be deceived, after a bit of looking (or searching a few minutes on Google) it turns out there are actually quite a few places and few of them are very busy. One of my all time favorite places is Kazashko, but I keep trying to find new places.

This photo was taken close to Izvorsko, just a couple of miles away from Varna on the road to Dobrich, at the start of the Dobrudzha plains. This area is also called “the
granary of Bulgaria” and there are wheat fields as far as the eye can see that shimmer golden under the setting sun.

As far as I know there is no bus that goes to Izvorsko. There is a bus that goes to Dobrich and you can ask the driver to stop, and they probably will, but then you have to somehow get back once you are done… So the best way is to rent a car, which can be done fairly cheap at a local car rental company. Parking along the road is not a problem, but do pay attention when getting out of the car and crossing the road.

Please, do not go into any of the fields without permission of the farmers, they rely on their harvest for their income and it is surprising how much a single person can trample.
