Of Ships and the Sea

Let’s try something different today, even though it technically is a sunrise photo. ?

I took this photo at Bolata Beach, when I was trying to take a picture of the sun rising over the bay. Mist thwarted that attempt, and I ended up making some completely different images that I set out to when I got up at 3:30 in the morning that day.

During the 90 minute drive all seemed well, the sky was clear, I was able to see many stars, and I was driving to my destination with confidence. But when I arrived it turned out the mist had completely different plans, and decided to roll on in and obscure everything that was less than 20 meters up.

Thankfully I had decided to linger and I was able to get a few shots in from above the mist, and after the sun was up for about 30 minutes, it started to burn away the mist. I was enjoying the sound of the waves hitting the breakwater when the fog cleared enough for me to see the beach and some of the fishing boats that were still there clearly. As I was there anyway, I decided to take some snaps and ended up with (many like ?) the one I am sharing with you today.

Bolata Bay and Bolata Beach are about a 90 minute drive north of Varna, just east of Kavarna and next to Kaliakra. The coastline consists mostly of rugged cliffs, something Kaliakra is famous for, and this beach is quite the exception. It offers stunning sunrises year round, when there is no mist, which is most common in the summer. So the winter is your best bet for nice sunrise pictures.

And hey, you can’t tell the temperature on photo’s… Can you…? But your hands will know the difference. ? When you go in the winter, make sure you bring some good gloves, a thick jacket and some warm wool- or fur-lined shoes.

I hope you enjoy my photos as much as I do. If you do, why not follow me on Instagram: @jackoleenders. It will help me out greatly!

    1. Hi Franky, sorry to reply so late, but it has been a very hectic summer. I will see if I can find some time to check out your blog this winter, when things will hopefully slow down a little again.
I am very happy to hear you like my writing style!
